Canon Abilities/Powers: He has trained in the dark arts and the demonic cultivation methods. This includes controlling walking corpses and other dead or possessed creatures. Cultivation uses an internal energy source that heightens his fighting abilities. Demonic Cultivation utilizes the resentful energy of a corpse or an area to fight. Without spirits around he would be considered a skilled swordsman, able to fight many people at once with just his agility and physical ability.
-Controlling Corpses - Demonic Cultivation uses the resentful spirit of the corpse in order to control how they behave or who they should attack versus just being able to attack at will. He's also created powerful soldiers using people he has killed and inputting nails into their head to keep them from regaining their consciousness. They then become puppets he can control.
-Summoning of Painted Eyes - This method involves summoning a spirit to possess whatever object the eyes are painted on, such as paper mannequins. The spirits summoned are strong enough to tear an arm off a fierce corpse.
Although not a power in the typical sense, he is extremely intelligent with the ability to figure out how to manipulate people into believing whatever he wants. He also is skilled at deception and was able to change his appearance in order to make Wei Wuxian and the disciples into thinking he was Xiao Xingchen. He also was able to fool Xiao Xingchen into believing he was an innocent cultivator caught up in something that got him injured. Able to hide who he was for over three years before being discovered by Song Lan. Being extremely clever allows him to adapt quickly to situations and even when caught he knows that it will only be temporary given his skills.
What is their greatest negative emotion towards an object, situation, or person in their past?: Xue Yang's greatest negative emotion is hate and his desires for revenge against anyone he feels has wronged him in his life or looked down upon him. Xue Yang is known for his merciless personality, claiming that if he wants revenge then not a single man, women, child or dog will be left standing when he finishes. Xue Yang viewed the cultivators around him with contempt and showed no fear in the presence of even the strongest of them. He spends his days stewing in his need for revenge on anyone he felt wronged him during his life. But his sense of justice goes beyond just an "eye for an eye". He lost a finger as a youth and in retaliation for that he destroyed an entire clan. He saw taking their lives as being barely enough payment for his little finger.
Xue Yang seems particularly sensitive to people looking down at him or thinking him inferior. One of the reasons he hated Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan so much was because he felt that they looked down on him at once point because of his behavior. All it took was one brief meeting and suddenly they became his targets for a lot of his contempt and he wanted to knock them down because of it. Eventually this brought him to killing Song Lan's entire clan and blinding the man.
How aware are they of this negative emotion, and how do they act on it in canon?: He is very aware of it and isn't afraid to act upon it. He feels no remorse for his actions or his desires and won't stop until he feels satisfied that his revenge is complete. He is ruthless and completely focused on these desires to get back at everyone who kicked him when he was down as a child.
It all started when he was a kid on the streets. He agreed to do a favor for a man in exchange for a plate of food. Xue Yang was starving and innocent and wanted nothing more then to enjoy a hot meal. So he took a note from the man to another man. But apparently this note was full of hateful things and so he was punished. But he still completed his task and so battered and bruised he returned to the first man. But he was already gone from the restaurant and hadn't left the food at all like he promised. Xue Yang was deeply disappointed. Later on he found that man and asked him about the promise for food. The man simply kicked him to the ground and ran over his hand, permanently scarring him. From that moment on, Xue Yang was never the same. He eventually grew up and found that man. He destroyed his entire clan because he could never forgive him for that moment when he was a child. Particularly because he had that constant reminder of a missing pinkie finger.
What is their greatest virtue?: Courage. Xue Yang wasn't born brave or strong. He made himself this way because of the way his childhood played out. A child of the streets he let his experiences shape him into a delinquent that refused to follow anyone's rules but his own. He isn't afraid to take on any number of enemies and will fight entire clans by himself..and win. He is well aware of how strong he is and that helps to fuel him into being very driven to obtain his goals. He isn't afraid of failure because he believes he will always succeed.
How aware are they of their virtue, and how do they act on it in canon?: He is very aware of this virtue and it is something that seems to be not only a source of power for him, but also his downfall. He takes on enemies that he shouldn't, that are stronger then him or are in greater numbers then a normal human could possibly handle. And for the most part he is successful because his drive to fulfill his desires is so strong that he has honed his skill with a blade to perfection. His skills as a cultivator are greater then most of the smaller sects can handle and when coupled with his inner courage and fear of nothing, not even death, it makes him a strong and seemingly undefeated enemy.
But he has also been hurt because of it. When it comes to the point that he has to tell Xingchen the truth about who he is and what he has done, he runs into doing so full speed ahead because there is no avoiding it at that moment. All his secrets had become unraveled and he no longer needed to hesitate about revealing the truth. But things don't turn out as he expects it to and he loses the one person who he had finally started to care about. He wasn't afraid of what the truth would do at the time because he felt like he was about to achieve his goal..without realizing that his goal over the past couple of years had actually changed from wanting to hurt Xingchen, to wanting to stay by his side. But then his whole life shattered the minute he lost Xingchen because of those truths he had revealed to him. That courage to reveal the truth actually took the one thing that mattered to him and now courage was all he had left.
